Microneedling – It’s The New Beauty Craze….But is it SAFE?
We read a recent article on CBS THIS MORNING website – “Microneedling: The beauty treatment craze now available at home” posted on March 6, 2017 and we asked Dr. Peter Neumann to weigh on this procedure and his thoughts and expert opinion on this latest craze in skin beauty! You see a lot of celebrities posting on their Instagram on how they swear by this procedure, but don’t believe everything you see or read!
According to Health.com, Microneedling is a skin-rejuvenating procedure in which tiny needles create punctures in the top layer of skin with the goal of improving overall texture and appearance. Once an old-school beauty treatment, microneedling is making a comeback among both the skincare-obsessed and A-listers alike. Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts are reportedly fans, and social media star Emily Skye recently shared some (particularly graphic) photos on Snapchat after undergoing the procedure.
Dr. Neumann weighs in:
Microneedling is a new and still unproven treatment method. There have been reports of some improvement after multiple treatments but also of scarring and infections following treatment. Home instruments should be cautioned due to the fact that when and if the skin is punctured, infection, scarring and permanent injury is possible. Speaking with a trained, experienced and knowledgeable provider should always be done first, being aware of the potential advantages and risks and dangers. Also, one must remember that the long term results and effects of this superficial treatment have not proven to last the test of time. When the risks outway the advantages, one should step back and consider all options closely.
