Dr. Neumann’s weighs in on an article New Beauty posted by Elise Minton , Executive Beauty Editor | October 30, 2015
Dermal fillers have been around for quite some time and there are a handful of manufacturers that promise reduction of wrinkles or even wrinkle free results. But there are still patients that end up with poor results. It depends on the type of filler that determines whether or not your results can be reversible.
New Beauty writes, “When it comes to hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm and Voluma, the effects can easily be “reversed” with hyaluronidase if you’re unhappy with the end result. Prospect, KY, dermatologist Tami Cassis, MD, says hyaluronidase is injected to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers and the results are usually seen within a day or two. The most common reason for reversing the results of filler is improper placement of the product. “If it has been injected too superficially in the skin, it can leave behind a lump, a bump or a bluish tint,” she says.”
“However, longer-lasting collagen-stimulating fillers like Sculptra Aesthetic and Radiesse are not reversible and can’t be treated with hyaluronidase. The same goes for silicone, permanent fillers and any others that aren’t FDA-approved. “Semi-permanent fillers may be able to be treated with steroids or lasers, or by cutting the filler out—those are really the only options. This can take several months to see a result and it doesn’t always work. Permanent fillers are next to impossible to reverse, especially those that are fat or silicone,” says Dr. Cassis.”
Dr. Neumann states, “She is essentially correct. All fillers dissolve over time except Silicone which is off label to place in the skin and is not safe. Hyaluronidase will expedite the break down of all injectables including fat as will steroids. Fat lasts 4-6 months and often settles over two weeks, Sultra last 2 years but requires 3 monthly injections, costs much more, and leaves bumps. The proper physician WILL inject the proper choice of filler, in the proper place and the proper amount so speedy breakdown is not an issue.”
